Boxer Baby Battles Bedtime!

Written by Mia Wenjen
Illustrated by  Kai Gietzen

Using figurative language, Boxer Baby Battles Bedtime shows how many common idioms have boxing origins.

Mom is counting on Dad to get Boxer Baby down for her nap, but Boxer Baby is the G.O.A.T. of sleep avoidance. This hilarious face-off mimics a three-round boxing match, as Boxer Baby is no lightweight when it comes to staying awake. Dad has a few tricks up his sleeve, but will it be enough in this epic battle against nap time? Boxer Baby Battles Bedtime! uses figurative language to show how many common idioms have boxing origins.

Note from Mia about the book.

When I started boxing in 2012, I realized how many boxing terms are part of everyday language, though people might not realize the origins. The father in Boxer Baby was inspired by Filipino-American boxer Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, a champion both in the ring and as a hands-on dad. I was also inspired by female boxers: Leila Ali, a pioneer in the sport of women’s boxing and one of the greatest female boxers of all time; Clarissa Shields, the first woman to win a gold medal in Olympic boxing and raises awareness of the Flint water crisis by dying her hair blue, the color of clean water; and Katie Taylor, an Olympic champion who holds all four major world titles in boxing. I had the great pleasure of meeting Katie at my boxing gym. Finally, this is my ode to stay-at-home dads!
